The University of Central Florida (UCF) Japanese Program and the Consulate-General of Japan in Miami present a special performance of the Shakuhachi (traditional Japanese flute) by virtuoso musician Marco Lienhard in the UCF Student Union Cape Florida Ballroom (room 316 ABCD). The event is free and open to the public, and a Q&A session will follow the performance.

A master of the Shakuhachi, an instrument he learned from Master Katsuya Yokoyama, Lienhard is also the founder and leader of Taikoza in New York. This ensemble features Taiko, Shakuhachi and Fue in unique, awe-inspiring performances that energize the senses. Since founding Taikoza in 1995, Lienhard has called the Big Apple his home.

Besides the Shakuhachi, Lienhard is proficient in other traditional Japanese instruments. He mastered Taiko drumming as a member of the Ondekoza troupe for 18 years, and studied the Fue and Nohkan Japanese flutes while touring as a professional Taiko drummer in Japan. With the Taikoza ensemble, Lienhard has toured the U.S., Japan, Mexico, and Europe. Together, they have performed in more than 3,000 concerts in Europe, Oceania, Asia, and North and South America with appearances at some of the world’s most prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Boston Symphony Hall, Osaka Castle Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Center, and Suntory Hall in Tokyo.

A multimedia artist, Lienhard has also contributed to several movies, documentaries and video games. He has done numerous recordings with Ondekoza and Taikoza, and has two critically acclaimed Shakuhachi recordings. In addition, Lienhard has appeared on many television shows including The Regis and Kathie Lee Show, the PBS special A World of Performances, a documentary for Canadian National TV, MTV and NBC's 1998 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the televised Sumo tournament at Madison Square Garden.
