Photo Workshop: Wading Birds of Florida with Optional Trip to Blue Cypress Lake

This part of Florida provides great backgrounds, lots of birds, and we'll hit the rookeries just in time for the chicks from newborn to a couple of weeks old. Both wetlands are boardwalk accessible, and for Loxahatchee we'll walk the Marsh Trail which offers bird and macro photography of wildflowers, butterflies, skippers, and more… The birds will be in there finest plumage which offers great images. Maresa will work with each person on improving their action photography at all places, with three decades of experience specializing in long lens and macro photography. You'll also have the option to join Maresa on an extra day trip up to Vero Beach to go out on a pontoon boat with guide to photograph the never ending osprey nests on Blue Cypress Lake Conservation Area. Wakodohatchee Wetlands: We will photograph from the boardwalk so, I would recommend using a monopod with a gimbal head to photograph with your longer lenses. You can hand hold your 100-400mm. The birds here are very tolerant of people so, you can get very close at times. Two rookeries are ten feet away and more. The third rookery you will need a 400mm or longer lens. This is where you will get your baby shots, nesting birds, and birds In-flight photography. Green Cay Wetlands: This is a longer boardwalk and birds again are very tolerant of people. Recommend monopods or hand held photography. There are some nice clean backgrounds on the north side, and that’s the best place to look for birds hunting for food. We'll be working the north and west side for the best opportunities. Lenses: 100-400mm no longer than a 500mm. Also have on hand 25mm extension tube for closer focusing. (For the close birds.) Arthur R Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge: We will arrive before sunrise for scenic and macro photography. Look for wildflowers, butterflies, skimmers, and dragonflies. We will walk along the Marsh Trail which is a series of dikes. Purple gallinules, limpkins, red-shouldered hawks, and snail kites frequent the area. Bring good walking shoes, tripods for longer lenses. Here you will need them. The entrance fee is $5.00. This portion is limited to 10 people with a minimum of 4 photographers. For bird photographers these are bucket list places. We will also have access to a conference room each day in Boca Raton to work on your images, and guidance from Maresa on Lightroom. On Tuesday afternoon she will have each student pick 2-4 images for a group critique. This information can go along way to improve your nature photography. You'll find Maresa easy going, informative, organized, and ready for any changes due to weather and so on. Optional trip to Blue Cypress Lake: Our private and experienced guide will take us out Wednesday afternoon till dusk, and Thursday morning in a pontoon boat. Each trip will consist of three hours each. The lens of choice is the 100-400mm, however for the afternoon trip a longer lens will get you to some of the back nest so, not disturb the nest in the foreground. Yes, there are that many nest! We will document nesting behavior, in-flight, possible territorial disputes, bringing in food, and so on. Also you may want to bring a shorter lens to photograph the beautiful cypress strands. The leaves bright green from spring emergence. There is room for mono pods or tripods. The optional trip is limited to 8 people with a minimum of 4 photographers.
